Start of school programs in Uganda
Two weeks ago we started a new school program in a boarding school for children who are suffering from post-war traumas in Gulu. As early as in 2006, we conducted interviews with 330 former child soldiers in this school for a study on the consequences of the 20-year long war, which left behind many traumatized children and families. Based on this study, our colleague Kathi Kiemer (school psychologist and currently an intern at CfT) developed the program “CfT Mental Health Club”: in the afternoons we discuss fears, needs, wishes and hopes with the children and in doing so we support their mental health. Our aim is to educate the children, but also their teachers, in which ways psychological and behavioral disorders are expressed and which measures can help. The sessions are complemented with games, discussion panels, stretching exercises and case studies.
