School children in Uganda

“Strong Minds” Since 2012 we have been offering a specific school program in a boarding school for war-traumatized children in Gulu. As early as in 2006 we conducted a survey of 330 former child soldiers about the consequences of 20 years of warfare which resulted in countless traumatized children and their families. Based on the results of the survey, we came up with the program ‘Strong Minds’. During these consultation hours in the afternoons we approach the children by asking them about their worries, needs, dreams and hopes in order to support their mental health. We inform children and teachers alike about psychological symptoms and appropriate treatments. Games, discussion rounds, relaxation exercises and exemplary scenarios complement these meetings. We aim to offer our ‘Strong Minds’ program in further schools in the surrounding areas in future.
